CSK sit 6th in the points table. 10 points from 10 matches. 5 wins, 5 losses. Two weeks ago that looked like an obituary. Right now, it looks like a launchpad.

Back-to-back 8-wicket wins over Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals changed everything. Sanju Samson's 87 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Ruturaj Gaikwad's side chasing down 156 with 15 balls to spare — suddenly CSK have momentum, a positive NRR of +0.151, and 4 games left to make something happen.

So can they qualify? Yes. Can they finish top 2? Also yes.

Here's the full picture.

The points math

16 points is the gold standard for guaranteed qualification in a 10-team IPL format. CSK are at 10. They play 4 more matches. Maximum possible: 18 points

Win 3 of their remaining 4 and they reach 16 points. Win all 4 and they hit 18, which almost certainly guarantees a top-2 finish.

Those are the two scenarios that matter. Everything else is hoping other teams collapse.

Scenario 1: 3 wins from 4 (16 points) — the safe path

At 16 points with a better NRR than mid-table rivals like Gujarat Titans, 3 wins should be enough to get them there regardless of what happens elsewhere. CSK's NRR of +0.151 compared to GT's -0.147 is a meaningful buffer if they end level on points. This is the realistic target. Win 3, don't rely on anyone else.

Scenario 2: 2 wins from 4 (14 points) — the sweat

If they win only 2, they finish on 14 points. In that event, they'd rely on their NRR remaining superior to other 14-point finishers and would need favorable results from SRH and GT matches.

14 points can sneak you in. But you're basically outsourcing your playoff fate to strangers. For a side with CSK's history, that's not a position you want to be in.

Only once has a team with 12 points made the playoffs  SRH in 2019. 14 is survivable; 12 is basically elimination.

Scenario 3: 1 win or fewer — it's over

Fewer than 2 wins would mathematically eliminate CSK from playoff contention. No complicated math needed there.

The remaining fixtures

CSK host LSG in Chennai on May 10, then travel to Lucknow to face them again on May 15. Two games against the team sitting bottom of the table. Those are the ones CSK absolutely have to win. LSG are in freefall — 6 points from 10 games, an NRR deep in the red.

The other two fixtures are tougher. But the LSG double-header? That's where CSK's playoff campaign gets built or buried.

Can CSK finish top 2?

Win all 4 remaining games and CSK reach 18 points — almost certainly enough for a top-2 spot. Right now Punjab Kings lead the table, with RCB, SRH and RR in a tense three-way tussle for the next spots. None of them are pulling away.

No team has sealed their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs yet. The table is genuinely open. A 4-game winning run for CSK would put serious pressure on every team above them.

Is it likely? Probably not . They'd need to go perfect while SRH, RCB and RR all stumble. But is it possible? Absolutely.

The NRR factor

Worth watching. This season appears tightly contested with several teams hovering around 12-13 points, meaning CSK could find themselves in a points tie, making NRR a crucial factor.

The 8-wicket win over DC boosted that number. Keep winning by margins like that and the NRR argument gets stronger every game.

What actually needs to happen

Win the LSG double-header. Those are non-negotiable. Take care of the easy fixtures, then see where the table lands heading into the final stretch.

CSK can't afford more than one defeat in their remaining matches if they want to stay in genuine contention. One slip is survivable. Two and they're back to hoping.

The good news: this team just remembered how to win. Two games, two romps. Samson is hitting. Anshul Kamboj has 17 wickets. The momentum is real.

Four games left. The playoffs are there for the taking.

Cricklytix Prediction

According to Cricklytix, if CSK wants to qualify for the playoffs, they will have to win both their matches against LSG. Because if we look at CSK's fixture, then LSG is the only team which is currently out of playoffs and their confidence is also very low. So if CSK wins both their matches from here onwards against LSG then CSK's chances of reaching the playoffs will increase to 99.9%. Second question is can CSK finish in the top two? Mathematically - YES. But honestly it is very difficult because to make it to the top 2 in the points table, CSK will have to win all their next four matches. Which is very difficult. Both SRH and GT have already stunned CSK in the first stage of the IPL. So,  CSK will have to be cautious while execute their plans against these both teams. Next week is going to be the most intriguing week of IPL 2026 so far, so fasten your seatbelts and enjoy Race to playoff week.
